STUDENT COURSE OF STUDY

 

Grades Kindergarten through 5th grade are the traditional self-contained classrooms. The maximum class size is 24 students.  These grade levels include classes in math, reading, language, science, history and Bible. The maximum class size is 24 students.  The A Beka Christian curriculum, which is a strong phonics program, is taught in the lower elementary grades and supplemented starting at third grade and up.  Both A Beka and ACSI Bible curriculum are used on a daily basis.  Special classes will also be taught in the following:

 

Music:

Students will study theory, history, reading of music and singing.

Computers

Students will be introduced to computers, basic keyboarding and an introduction to basic word processing.

 Art: 

The Meet the Masters Program will be presented and various art expressions will be experienced.

Spanish:

Basic conversational Spanish will be introduced in 3rd grade and continued through 8th grade.

First Grade Overview:  

     Math:

Addition and Subtraction families 1-18, one, two and three digit addition (some carrying), also including clocks, money, place value, fractions, and measurement

     Language Arts:

A Beka Phonics, punctuation, syllables, contractions, rhyming  words, etc.

     Reading: A Beka Curriculum-heavy phonetic emphasis
     Bible:

Daily Bible story, memory verses, daily prayer, & practical application

     Science, Health &  

      History:

Basic introduction
   
   

 

          

Grades 6-8 (Middle School) are set up in a traditional style of students changing classes for their different academic periods.  The maximum class size is 28.  All middle school classes have Bible, Math, Language Arts and the following:

 

    Science   History   Math
6th Grade   Earth   Old World   Math Procedures
7th Grade   Life   Ancient History   Pre-Algebra I or II
8th Grade   Physical   United States   Pre-Algebra II or Algebra

 

All students have P.E. each week which meets the state requirement for physical education.  All 8th grade students will have an Introduction to Spanish class, which is designed to help them prepare for Spanish I in high school.  Seventh grade students may be eligible for Pre-algebra I or Pre-algebra II  based on their ability.  Eighth grade students who have successfully passed an Algebra readiness test in 7th grade may then take Algebra I.  Electives may include art, computers, model building, cooking, sewing, woodshop, ceramics, student council, oil painting, aerobics, teacher’s aide, or musical theatre.   Electives are for one trimester and may vary from trimester to trimester.

 

EIGHTH GRADE

1) REGISTRATION FOR HIGH SCHOOL: Huntington Beach High School will provide registration information and on-campus testing for our eighth grade students.  They will notify us of any parent meetings, orientations, etc.  This is for all students who will be entering any of the Huntington Beach high schools.  H.C.S. will keep you informed of these dates as we are notified by Huntington Beach High School.

 

2) GRADUATION:  All of our eighth grade students are invited to participate in a graduation ceremony to be located in the First Christian Church auditorium.

 

STANFORD ACHIEVEMENT TEST

One very important tool that our school uses as a guide to measure how our students perform is the Stanford Achievement Test or S.A.T.  This is a standardized test used nationally by many public and private schools.  H.C.S is very proud of how our students perform.  H.C.S. tests students every April.  Test results are returned to parents in early June.  Test results for the 2005-2006 school year are:
